Many people store their things in self-storage centers where they offer safe, clean storage units. For example, storage units are more or less like garages, even down to the large, roll-up garage door at the front. In addition, they can usually be found in different sizes, as many folks store different amounts of stuff. If you want to know how big is a 5×5 storage unit, we have the perfect information for you!
What do we mean by “different amounts of stuff”? Well, for example, let’s say you live in your college dorm. Most college dorms are very small and usually shared by at least two students. If so, you’d likely have a bed, desk, desk chair, nightstand, shelf, and maybe a lamp or two in your dorm. Plus enough to fill 5 to 10 medium boxes with clothes, school supplies, etc. In short, a relatively small amount of stuff.
Now let’s say you own a 5-bedroom home filled with all the typical furniture. For example, dining room sets, dressers, tables, chairs, and several large closets filled with clothes. You also have an entire garage filled with things and maybe an attic and basement. Rather than a small amount of stuff, you have a massive amount of stuff.
If you’re the former, a college student, you’ll need a very small storage unit. So that would be a 5’x5’ unit, the smallest most self-storage centers offer. However, if you’re the latter, a homeowner with a large home, you will likely need the biggest storage unit. That’s typically a 10’x30’ storage unit, bigger than a 2-car garage. Regardless of how much you need to store, we can help!

How Big is a 5×5 Storage Unit?
A 5×5 storage unit is 5 feet wide by 5 feet long by 8 feet high. That’s 25 square feet of floor space or 200 cubic feet of overall space. So, to give you some reference, that’s about the size of a small bedroom closet. (Not a walk-in closet.) Although it’s not a lot of space, it’s best for someone who doesn’t have a lot of stuff to store. (Like a college student!)
How Much Stuff Will Fit in Your Unit?
A 5×5 storage unit can hold the following items if you stack things well.
- 1 single mattress and box spring (30 cubic feet)
- 1 small desk (20 cubic feet)
- 10 medium (3 cubic foot) boxes (30 cubic feet)
- 1 desk chair (6 cubic feet)
- 1 night table (6 cubic feet)
- 10 small (1.5 cubic foot) boxes (15 cubic feet)
- 1 college “cube’ fridge (6 cubic feet)
- 1 small bookcase (20 cubic feet)
- 5 large (6 cubic foot) boxes (30 cubic feet)
- 1 full-size bicycle (10 cubic feet)
That’s 173 cubic feet of stuff, leaving you with 27 cubic feet to spare. Yes, you can use that space if you like. However, you would have to stack your things all the way to the ceiling. That might be risky depending on what’s in your boxes, or it might be perfectly safe. (Better to err on the side of caution, regardless.)
Are there Drive-Up 5×5 Units?
Yes, most Southern Self Storage locations have drive-up 5×5 storage units. That means you can drive right up to them and park in front of them. The advantage is that it makes loading and unloading your storage unit a breeze. Keep in mind, though, that drive-up storage units aren’t temperature-controlled. The temperature in the storage unit is similar to the temp outside.
